I was deputed to one of the plant constructions sites in Turkey for instrumentation erection and commissioning of the plant in 2006-07. This was one of the projects using a special technology which was engineered by me as a lead engineer.
At that time, we had got thirty days at a time stay on the
Turkish visa. So, after every 30 days I used to come back to India for a week,
renew my visa and then go back to site. The plant site was 1.5-2 hours away
from Konya city. So, my return travel was Plant site Cumara to Konya by car,
and Konya-Istanbul-Mumbai by aeroplane.
To catch a flight at 10 am in the morning, we started at 7 am.
The roads were excellent, the car was in good condition and was running at a
speed of 180-200km/hr. This was the normal speed there. Around 8am our car just
crossed a fly over, and within a second one of the car’s tyres burst. The car
was in great speed at that time. Adjoining the road, there was an empty field.
The driver was quite experienced, and he steered the speeding car into the empty
field. The driver did not leave the steering, kept it moving in whichever way
possible. There were huge jerks and bumps with speed, we were shouting and
crying in the car. At that time, I remembered my 3 year old daughter. When the
car finally stopped, the thought that flashed through my mind was that my
daughter would be left motherless if I had died. We were shaken with the thought
that WHAT if this would have happened a minute before when the car was on the
fly over!
We got down from the car and could see only the rim of the wheel,
the tyre had been completely burnt away! After this, it was an adventure to
catch the flight on time. My fellow colleagues helped me a lot till I got into
the flight.
So, accident- root cause analysis- lesson learnt…I took it
as an engineering lesson.
Hence, I would like to conclude with the following dos and don’ts:
Before you start your car travel, always check whether there is adequate air pressure in the tyres (every tyre has guidelines of min-max air pressure, the measurement gauge shall show accurate readings), tyre condition (life), road condition (i.e. less speed on gravel/wet road) and accordingly decide the vehicle speed. Wheel alignment, tyre rotation, replacing old tyres are necessary things required to be done by the car owner.
Life has its ups and downs, but life is beautiful!

नूतनीकरण करून साइटवर परत जायचे.
कोनया नावाच्या
शहरापासून १.५ – २ तासांच्या अंतरावर प्लांट साइट होती. म्हणून माझा
परतीचा प्रवास प्लांट साइट कुमरा ते कोनया कारने, कोनया-इस्तंबुल-मुंबई विमानाने असा असायचा.
सकाळी दहा वाजताचे
विमान होते, आम्ही सकाळी सात वाजता विमानतळावर जाण्यासाठी निघालो. रस्ते
उत्तम होते, गाडी उत्तम
होती, १८० – २०० किमी / ताशी
वेगाने चालली होती. तिथे हा वेग सामान्य होता. सकाळी
आठच्या सुमारास आमच्या कारने फ्लाय ओव्हर ओलांडला आणि एका सेकंदात कारचा एक पुढचा टायर फुटला. रस्त्याच्या कडेला एक रिकामे शेत होते. टायर फुटतांना कार
रस्त्याच्या कडेला असलेल्या रिकाम्या शेतात शिरली. आमच्या ड्रायव्हरने कारचे स्टेअरिंग सोडले नाही, तो कोणत्याही
प्रकारे ते फिरवत
राहिला. कार ड्रायव्हर खूप अनुभवी होता. कार वेगात होती, धक्के खात होती. आम्ही
कारमध्ये ओरडत, किंचाळत होतो.
जेव्हा गाडी थांबली आणि
आम्ही कारमधून खाली उतरलो, पाहतो तर काय, कारच्या
टायरच्या चिंधड्या होऊन तिथे टायर चे नामोनिशान नव्हते ,फक्त रिम होती. गाडी
फ्लाय ओव्हर ब्रिजवर असताना एक मिनिट आधी असे घडले असते तर आमचे काय झाले असते या विचाराने आमचा
थरकाप उडाला. त्यावेळी मला माझ्या 3 वर्षाच्या मुलीचा चेहरा डोळ्यासमोर आला. गाडी थांबल्यावर, जेव्हा थरथरणाऱ्या पायांनी आम्ही खाली उतरलो आणि
समोरच्या फ्लाय ओव्हर ब्रिजकडे पाहत माझ्या तोंडातून वाक्य बाहेर पडले, ‘मी गेले असते
तर माझ्या मुलीला आई राहिली नसती’.
यानंतर विमान पकडणे
हे एक साहस होते. मी विमानात बसेपर्यंत माझ्या सहकाऱ्यांनी मला खूप मदत केली.
मी हि
घटना एक अभियांत्रिकी धडा म्हणून घेतली.
आणि झालेली घटना - तिचे मूळ कारण शोधणे -त्यातून धडा शिकणे, यातून टायर फुटू नये म्हणून
काय काळजी घ्यावी हे शिकले.
म्हणून या अनुभवातून,
टायर्स फुटू नये म्हणून, मला खालील 'काय करावे ' आणि 'काय करू नये ' हे सांगायला आवडेल:
कारचा प्रवास सुरू करण्यापूर्वी टायरमध्ये योग्य
हवेचा दाब आहे की नाही ते तपासा (प्रत्येक प्रकारच्या टायरसाठी
किमान(कमीत कमी )- कमाल (जास्तीत जास्त) हवेच्या दाबाच्या मार्गदर्शक सूचना असतात,

कारच्या मालकाने अवश्य करण्याच्या गोष्टी आहेत.
